|Built in 1855, The General provided freight and passenger service between Atlanta, Georgia, and Chattanooga, Tennessee, before the American Civil War on the Western and Atlantic Railroad. Confederate forces damaged the locomotive during the war, to prevent the Union army from using it. After the war, the locomotive was repaired and returned to service. The locomotive was retired from service in 1891 and restored in 1901. The General has been on display in a museum in Georgia since 1972.
