These locomotive were designed in 1973 in the Lyudinovsky Locomotive Plant. They were destined to be shunting locomotives with eight traction motors and a diesel engine giving an output of 2000 hp. Intended for export, and shunting of cargo trains at stations, they needed 40-50% higher tractive force than the six-axle shunting locomotives, such as ТЭМ1 and ТЭМ2. First two units of ТЭМ7 locomotives were finished in 1975 and until May 2012 when the production stopped, they managed to make 436 ТЭМ7 locomotives in total. |
