The idea for the T499 series sparked in the project offices of the Czech engineering company CKD in late 60's and early 70's of the 20th century. Sporting an engine with 230 millimeter cylinder bore, the T499 was the fastest and most powerful locomotive in the CKD lineup. Technologically, the design of T499 was very modern at that time. It was equipped with the newest type of traction motors, an undercarriage with secondary Flexicoil suspension, electrodynamic brakes, automatic train speed control, AC/DC power transfer and many more novelty engineering solutions, which made the T499 one of the finest diesel locomotives of its era. |
